• The new software will be loaded onto existing infotainment systems with an over-the-air update.
  • Volvo says the XC90’s updated system makes important functions easier to access.
  • Models built as early as 2020 with an Android operating system will get the update.

Few things date modern cars more than old infotainment systems, but if you own a Volvo built from 2020 onwards, you’ll soon be able to enjoy the firm’s latest-generation software, which premiered with the facelifted XC90.

While much of the new software will be familiar to existing Volvo owners, some key changes have been made. For example, the most common apps and controls have been repositioned to the home screen, just like in Volvo’s EVs. This reduces the number of taps required to access important functions like Google Maps and smartphone media.

A new bar has also been added along the bottom, which displays an owner’s recently used apps and a switch to turn on the outside cameras at any time. This new software premiered alongside an enlarged, 11.2-inch free-standing touchscreen display on the XC90, and while older models won’t get this larger screen, the software has been adapted to different screen sizes and shapes.

Next year, roughly 2.5 million Volvo owners will receive the new software. It will be introduced to all models using an Android operating system built as early as 2020, including the C40, XC40, EX40, EC40, S60, V60, V60 Cross Country, XC60, S90, V90, V90 Cross Country, and XC90. The system will be updated over-the-air, free of charge.

“Our new-generation user experience will deliver a significant improvement in customer experience and is an important step in our journey to delivery human-centric technology solutions to our customers,” chief product and strategy officer at Volvo Cars, Erik Severinson said. “We’ll continuously and seamlessly adapt the user experience to match the needs of our customers through new and enhanced features that are delivered through over-the-air updates, to improve your car – and your experience – over time.”
