• The supercar caught fire on a Californian highway, leaving it completely destroyed.
  • It’s unclear what triggered the inferno but it appears to have started in the rear half.
  • Fortunately, the driver and his wife escaped the fire without any reported injuries.

A first-generation Lamborghini Gallardo has been left as nothing more than a burnt-out shell after catching fire on a highway in Riverside, California. Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to pour one out for this Gallardo, as they are becoming an increasingly uncommon sight on our roads, 21 years on from its launch.

Not much is known about the inferno and what triggered it. However, videos from the scene appear to show it started towards the rear half of the Italian supercar, so it’s reasonable to assume that it originated somewhere in the engine bay, housing that fabulous 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V10.

A thick black plume of smoke filled the air around the Lamborghini, and we can only begin to imagine what it must have been like watching the car get toasted like a marshmallow. But, unlike a marshmallow, the result is not a delicious and sweet treat. Instead, it’s a destroyed supercar that had to be towed away from the scene.

Fire crews did respond to the inferno. Unfortunately, the fire spread too quickly for the Raging Bull to be saved. The only area of the bodywork not touched by the flames is the driver’s side corner of the front bumper, part of the quarter panel, and one of the front wheels, so it’s definitely a write-off.

One photo taken of the burning Gallardo shows that it was equipped with a small rear wing, which looks identical to the wing found on the original Superleggera. Although there’s a chance this was indeed one of these lightweight specials, we have no way of knowing since the car was burnt to a crisp.

Facebook posts suggest that the male owner and his wife thankfully escaped without injury.
