- The recall involves certain G550 and Mercedes-AMG G63 models.
- The latch and lock trap may have been manufactured with unacceptable tolerance variances.
- Mercedes initially issued a recall for the fault in May 2021.
The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is an SUV that you expect to be built tough. It should be able to go pretty much anywhere, do almost anything, and keep occupants cocooned in luxury. However, more than 100 examples need to be recalled in the United States because of an issue with the rear door latches.
According to the carmaker, the rear doors may not fully close even when they appear to be closed and could open while driving. It says that there are tolerance variances in the positioning of the latch and the lock trap, which could prevent them from opening, closing, or locking correctly.

A recall notice adds that if the child safety lock is activated on the rear doors and excessive force is used to try and open them from the inside, internal latching components may deform and prevent the rear doors from being opened from the outside. That could be a major issue in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury to occupants.
A total of 134 G-Class models in the US are involved. These include select 2019-2023 G550s built between August 2, 2018, and December 6, 2022, as well as certain 2019-2022 G63s manufactured from August 2, 2018, to December 12, 2022.
Mercedes was tipped off to a potential problem in January 2021 when a US dealer inquired about obtaining replacement parts for the rear door latches of a G-Class. The brand launched an investigation into why the dealer couldn’t get parts and, in the process, discovered several warranty claims about door latches and associated components, including reports of a rear door opening while driving.
A recall to fix the issue was initially launched in May 2021 but it’s since been determined some vehicles had been repaired with a non-functional door lock.
Dealers will be alerted to the recall from September 16, while owners will be told of the recall after September 30. The right-hand side rear door lock of vehicles embroiled in the recall will be replaced with a new one.
