- A small SUV driver caused a three-vehicle crash in Connecticut.
- They managed to escape without any contact with the other vehicles in what is called a near-miss.
- There are several lessons to learn from the short but brutal crash.
Over-the-road truckers see all sorts of wild things on highways as they go about their business. One in Connecticut recorded a strange crash on August 22. In what initially appeared like unexplained chaos was the result of one truly bad driver and other ancillary factors.
These vehicles are all on Interstate 91 southbound in Windsor and our dashcam owner is sitting in the far right lane, lane four. In lane three is another 18-wheeler approaching traffic at a faster rate. As they do, traffic begins to slow and suddenly, the truck swerves hard to the left.

A red Subaru WRX passing in lane two is forced into lane one, an HOV lane, but the trucker still makes contact with the sedan. The Subaru spins and slides back across the highway before hitting a Honda Odyssey in lane four. Then, the van spins and rolls back toward the fast lane before hitting the truck that swerved in the first place.
A closer look shows that a compact SUV (it looks like a previous generation Toyota RAV4, though we can’t say for sure) in lane three actually caused the whole thing by trying to make it to exit 35 A. To do so, they slowed down far below the speed of other traffic. The semi that swerved did so to avoid hitting the crossover. It’s worth noting that the truck appears to brake quite late so perhaps that driver was distracted.

Nevertheless, the entire series of crashes only happens because of the SUV driver’s actions. They wait far too long to get into lane four, they don’t readjust and move on when they are too far past the exit to make it safely, and they don’t speed up to get around the van when they’re in the passing lane in relation to the Honda.
According to the WRX driver in a Reddit post, everybody walked away from the crash without serious injury. At the same time, the SUV drove away without any accountability, they claim. Here’s a quick lesson for everyone to be mindful of everything happening on the highway. There are lots of unskilled drivers out there.
