• The two new accessories were confirmed by Cybertruck lead engineer Wes Morrill.
  • Pricing details have yet to be announced.
  • Rivian already offers the R1T with additional underbody protection as part of an off-road package.

The Tesla Cybertruck is about to get some welcome upgrades to make it more suitable for adventures along rugged terrain, an area of the car’s broad arsenal that has been called into question several times since its launch.

Unlike the Rivian R1T, the Cybertruck is not currently available with optional underbody protection to keep the battery pack safe even when crashing into rocks along difficult off-road trails. That’s soon going to change as the Cybertruck’s lead engineer, Wes Morrill, has revealed on X that the EV will soon get new “armor” for the battery pack and be offered with rock sliders.

Pickup truck owners absolutely love to accessorize their vehicles, particularly if they plan to go off-roading. Many car manufacturers make the most of this by offering large catalogs of optional parts that they encourage buyers to splurge on. Tesla has done the same with the Cybertruck and offers many parts, including a truck-mounted tent, a tailgate ramp, crossbars, and a pair of jump seats that sit on the tailgate.

Morrill did not state what material the battery armor and rock sliders will be made from, but whatever that is, the parts probably won’t come cheap. Rivian’s off-road package for the R1T is a pricey $3,950, but in addition to a reinforced underbody shield, comes with 20-inch all-terrain wheels, a full-size spare, and a built-in air compressor.

Perhaps the most important add-on feature coming to the Cybertruck will be the long-promised range-extender battery. The battery takes up roughly one-third of the EV’s bed and is said to increase range of a standard dual-motor model from 318 miles (512 km) to 470 miles (756 km), while the range of the CyberBeast could swell from 301 miles (484 km) to 440 miles (708 km). Specifications about this pack are limited, but it may have around 47 kWh of useable storage and will set back buyers a cool $16,000.
