• The Chinese carmaker is expected to launch the new model next month.
  • While many rivals are chasing huge horsepower numbers, the most powerful P7+ only has 308 hp.
  • Customers should be able to choose between 60.7 kWh and 76.3 kWh battery packs.

Xpeng’s fleet of EVs in China is growing and will soon include a new model known as the P7+. Images and details of the car have surfaced thanks to the country’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, while earlier this month, Xpeng’s chief executive made an appearance in a P7+ prototype at a major conference in Hangzhou.

The P7+ is believed to serve as a replacement for the outgoing P7i, which itself succeeded the P7. As its name implies, the new model is a ‘plus-size’ version of its predecessor and is 5,056 mm (199 inches) long, making it substantially longer than the 4,888 mm (192.4 inches) of the current car. The wheelbase has also grown marginally from 2,998 mm (118 inches) to an even 3,000 mm (118.1 inches).

Xpeng’s latest EV has a sleek and low-slung profile which is bound to appeal to local buyers. The front end sports a pair of small air inlets, individual headlamps, and separate LED daytime running lights connected with a light bar.

The shape of the rear is particularly interesting as it appears the P7+ has a liftgate. It also rocks some intriguing LED taillights as well as a blacked-out bumper which nicely complements the black roof and pillars.

Technical specifications haven’t been confirmed. Xpeng is tipped to be using a lithium-iron-phosphate battery pack sourced from Eve Power that will drive a 241 hp (180 kW) motor in the base model and a 308 hp (230 kW) motor in the higher-end variant. Energy consumption is thought to be in the range of 11 kWh/100 km. An entry-level battery pack with 60.7 kWh is on the cards, while the flagship option will have a 76.3 kWh capacity. These models should be good for 357 miles (575 km) and 425 miles (685 km) of range, respectively.

A key development of the P7+ is its use of Xpeng’s new Eagle Eye system. This AI-utilizing self-driving program is a vision-based system similar to what Tesla uses and lacks the expensive LiDAR of other models from the car brand. The new P7+ should launch next month.
