General Motors (GM) has reported a substantial year-over-year increase in its electric vehicle (EV) sales through the third quarter of 2023, although its overall deliveries have declined compared to the previous year.
The Detroit carmaker sold 32,095 electric vehicles in the U.S. during Q3 2023, a significant rise from the 21,930 sold in Q2 and the 16,425 sold in Q1. Overall, GM’s EV sales are up 60% year-over-year and up 46% compared to the second quarter of 2024. This growth boosted GM’s share of the U.S. EV market to 9.5%, up from 7.1% in the last quarter. These gains can be attributed to a handful of models across the GM family.

For example, the newly-launched Chevrolet Equinox EV has started to reach the hands of customers, with 10,785 units delivered this year—9,772 of which were in the third quarter alone. Additionally, deliveries of the Blazer EV started in earnest this year. While just 19 were sold last year, 15,232 have found homes this year, with 7,998 of those deliveries coming in Q3. The Silverado EV has also started deliveries, and 5,252 have been sold year-to-date, 1,995 of which in Q3.
These new models have been crucial for Chevrolet as the brand phases out the Bolt EV and EUV. While 49,494 units of the Bolt were sold in 2023, sales have dipped significantly to 8,582 this year, with only 168 sold in Q3.
The Cadillac Lyriq is another EV performing well for GM. It is Cadillac’s second best-selling model year-to-date with 20,318 units, of which 7,224 examples were sold from July-September. This places it only behind the Escalade, which has seen its sales slip by 11.1% to 27,992 units year-to-date.
Looking at the sales results from individual brands reveals that Buick sales are up 9.9% this year to 137,235 units, while Cadillac sales are also up 0.3% to 111,120. Chevrolet’s sales have dropped 3.0% from 1,304,104 to 1,264,745 since January, while GMC’s have risen 1.5% to 435,828. This year, GM has delivered 1,949,920 vehicles in the US, a 1.0% decrease from last year.
