• Isuzu has introduced a new powertrain for the D-Max pickup and MU-X SUV in Thailand.
  • The 2.2-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine generates 161 hp and 400 Nm of torque.
  • The mill is mated to a new 8-speed automatic, improving performance and fuel efficiency.

Isuzu might be working on a fully electric version of the D-Max, but before that arrives in 2025, the midsize pickup gained another powertrain option. The Isuzu D-Max pickup and the closely-related MU-X SUV are now available with a new 2.2-liter diesel in Thailand, offering improved performance and fuel economy.

The 2.2-liter turbodiesel, codenamed RZ4F, produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 400 Nm (295 lb-ft) of torque. Isuzu says that the engine is more quiet, featuring improved combustion and a variable turbocharger.

The 2.2 Ddi MaxForce is mated to a six-speed manual or a new eight-speed torque converter automatic, contributing to the performance and efficiency gains. According to the official website, the new engine and gearbox combination brings 56% more torque at startup and 10% better fuel economy compared to its predecessor.

The power output and torque figures of the new powertrain place it right in between the engines of recently facelifted D-Max and MU-X models. The base 1.9-liter makes 148 hp (110 kW / 150 PS) and the flagship 3.0-liter is good for 187 hp (140 kW / 190 PS) – mated to either a six-speed manual or a six-speed auto.

The new versions of the Isuzu D-Max and MU-X will go on sale in Thailand on November 28. Pricing of the D-Max ranges between THB 595,000-937,000 ($17,200-27,000) depending on the trim and bodystyle, while the MU-X starts from THB 1,194,000 ($34,435).

Isuzu didn’t get into details about availability in other markets, which are expected to follow in the near future.

Isuzu‘s “multi-pathway” strategy until 2030 includes the development of new technologies for combustion engines, BEVs, and FCEVs, offering different options based on the region. The fully electric D-Max coming in 2025 will be the automaker’s first production EV. Rival midsize trucks with electrified powertrains include the mild-hybrid Toyota Hilux and the plug-in hybrid Ford Ranger.

Correction: The original article stated that the 2.2 Ddi MaxForce turbodiesel has mild hybrid tech, which is not the case. The only Isuzu D-Max engine that’s currently available with a 48V system is the 1.9-liter turbodiesel with the six-speed automatic, unveiled in October 2024.
