- Police haven’t released details about the man who sped down Ford Road in reverse.
- After reversing for more than a mile, the driver decided to surrender.
Attempting to run away from police is a bad idea and almost never ends well. Evidently, the driver of this Hyundai Santa Fe never got that memo and not only did he think he would out-run the authorities, but he thought he could do it in a family SUV while driving in reverse. As you can probably imagine, it didn’t go well.
Things kicked off in Dearborn, Michigan, last Tuesday afternoon when police spotted the allegedly stolen Hyundai at a BP gas station and attempted to stop the suspect. Rather than doing the smart thing and complying with the orders from officers, the driver put the SUV in reverse and hit the gas.

Initially, the driver can be seen doing a full loop of the gas station, crossing between the pumps and clipping a silver Chevy pickup before whacking the front end of a Ford Explorer police cruiser that arrived at the scene. Moments later, the driver of the Santa Fe exited the car park and headed onto Ford Road.
Anyone who knows anything about cars will know that you can’t drive very fast in reverse and as such, the chase never hit high speeds. But, it was still incredibly dangerous as there were plenty of other cars on the road, and the SUV repeatedly swerved left and right, presumably as the driver tried to keep it under control.
Police let the chase go on for roughly a mile along Ford Road before the driver of the Santa Fe decided enough was enough and pulled over. Authorities quickly swooped to arrest the man.
The name of the driver has not been released, and it’s unknown where the Hyundai was stolen from, but WXYZ notes it had Florida plates.
