• The recall involves 2023-2024 Honda Passport and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot models.
  • Honda isn’t aware of any injuries or deaths caused by the possible fuel leak.
  • Dealers have been instructed to ensure the loose connection is fixed.

Certain Honda Passport and Honda Pilot models in the US are at an increased risk of catching fire after a crash because of an issue with the fuel filler. This has prompted the carmaker to issue a recall that impacts 205,760 examples across the country.

The recall notice, issued through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), reveals that there may be an incomplete connection between the fuel filler neck tube and the fuel filler pipe. Honda says these two components could separate in a crash, triggering a fuel leak that could cause a fire. The carmaker says an out-of-sequence process used during the installation of the fuel pipe assembly may have resulted in the poor connection.

The recall impacts 2023-2024 Honda Passport models built between February 15, 2023, and May 13, 2024, as well as 2023-2025 Honda Pilots manufactured from February 14, 2023, to May 8, 2024.

Honda says it first became aware of a potential issue on May 13, 2024, when it received a warranty claim from a Honda dealer who noticed the fault during a pre-delivery inspection. The company quickly discovered six vehicles in its warehouse had a bad connection. It’s not aware of any injuries or deaths caused by the possible fuel leak.

Dealerships were notified of the recall on December 3, and owners will be officially alerted starting January 6, 2024. The fix is straightforward: dealerships will simply secure the fuel filler neck tube to the fuel filler pipe. It’s an easy fix, which means the inconvenience to owners should be minimal. Plus, Honda is offering reimbursement for anyone who has already paid to fix the issue out of pocket.

This isn’t Honda’s first rodeo with fire-related recalls. Back in late October, the automaker revealed that over 720,000 vehicles could be affected by faulty high-pressure fuel pumps, which, if cracked, could lead to another fire hazard.
