• Genesis has unveiled its first-ever racecar for the prestigious LMDh class.
  • The Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar will compete at WEC (2026) and IMSA (2027).
  • The brand has also announced the new Genesis Magma Racing team.

Genesis has officially announced its involvement in motorsports, and it will all start with the new GMR-001 Hypercar designed for the LMDh class. The new Genesis Magma Racing team will compete at the WEC and IMSA championships in 2026 and 2027 respectively.

The Genesis GMR-001 Hypercar follows the striking X Gran Berlinetta and X Gran Racer Vision GT concepts, although its design has been refined to reflect the LMDh requirements. Still, it is described as “a forward-looking inspiration for upcoming models”, incorporating several distinct Genesis features like the double horizontal LEDs and the sweeping line on the profile.

The racecar has pronounced fenders with large air channels around its sculpted bodywork, a capsule-shaped canopy, and oversized aero components. These include an expansive splitter, a vertical fin, and a massive rear wing with an active spoiler. The final livery will likely include the new Genesis Magma Racing logo, which is inspired by the Korean alphabet.

The company didn’t announce the hypercar’s specifications, but we know it will feature a standardized hybrid system. The LMDh regulations cap the car’s output at 500kW / 671 horsepower, with just 50kW / 67 horsepower coming from its electric motor, and mandate rear-wheel drive. The minimum weight is set at 1,030 kilograms.

The special event in Dubai has also marked the official launch of the Genesis Magma Racing. Cyril Abiteboul, President of Hyundai Motorsports GmbH, is the Team Principal, following his experience in Formula 1 with Caterham and Renault. The French engineer said: “We are elevating our circuit racing expertise to a whole new level as we prepare to compete in some of the world’s most challenging series.”

The GMR-001 will be driven by André Lotterer and Luis “Pipo” Derani. Lotterer is a three-time winner at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with Audi and has two WEC titles under his belt. Derani’s greatest achievements are a victory at the 24 Hours of Daytona and four victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The French track Circuit Paul Ricard will serve as a base for Genesis’ motorsport division. Technical development of the GMR-001 Hypercar will take place in 2025, ahead of its racing debut in 2026. Before taking on the WEC and IMSA challenge, Genesis Magma Racing will collaborate with IDEC Sport for an LMP2 entry at the 2025 European Le Mans Series.
