- The MX-5 Mazda Spirit Racing Special Model will make its premiere on January 10.
- The new edition sports some subtle aero add-ons and six-spoke black wheels.
- A lifted Mazda CX-5 built with Toyo Tires will also be displayed in Tokyo.
Mazda has previewed a special racing-inspired version of the iconic MX-5, which will debut at the Tokyo Auto Salon in early January. A pair of striking racing concepts will also be put up on display, each outfitted with many track-focused upgrades.
The new MX-5 is known as the Mazda Spirit Racing Special Model. For those not aware, Mazda Spirit Racing will become the brand’s new high-performance division and replace Mazdaspeed. The Mazda Spirit Racing name has been used since 2021 in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series, and this special MX-5 will be the division’s first road-going model. It looks virtually identical to the concept unveiled at the 2024 Tokyo show.

Few technical details are known about the car, including where it will be sold and if it will be a Japan-only model. The sole photo released shows the new edition will receive a tweaked front end with a new splitter and a special badge in the grille. We can also see a set of decals on one of the MX-5s. Other changes include a set of new six-spoke black wheels sitting over a set of red brake calipers, redesigned side skirts, wing mirrors, and a lip spoiler at the rear.
There’s no word on whether the Mazda Spirit Racing will benefit from any mechanical changes, but we’d be surprised if it didn’t. While we don’t expect engine modifications, things like the suspension and brakes will likely be upgraded.
The event will also showcase two of Mazda’s latest racing concepts. The first is known as the Mazda3 Bio Concept and will be presented alongside the MX-5-based Roadster CNF Concept. Both of these cars had their first competitive outing during the final round of the Super Taikyu Series at Fuji Raceway last month. They include distinctive graphics, towering rear wings, new front splitters, and race-ready wheels that resemble the road-going MX-5 from Mazda Spirit Racing.
A lifted CX-5 built in partnership with Toyo Tires will also be shown at the event.
