- Tesla and Mercedes are conducting small recalls related to airbags.
- Hundreds of Tesla Model S and X vehicles are being recalled over airbags that could tear during deployment.
- The Mercedes recall impacts a single EQS as its side curtain airbags could be damaged by incorrect mounting brackets.
Airbags have saved over 50,000 lives, but recalls have become increasingly common. We can add to that list as Tesla and Mercedes have announced new airbag-related recalls.
The first involves 294 Tesla Model S and Model X vehicles from the 2024 and 2025 model years. The EVs were equipped with a driver side airbag that may have been damaged during assembly by ZF-Lifetec. This can cause the airbag to tear during deployment, which increases the risk of an injury during a crash.

The supplier identified a tear during “lot acceptance testing” in early November and began an investigation. This uncovered the use of an unauthorized tool during assembly, which eventually led to the recall.
Tesla isn’t aware of any injuries or accidents related to the issue, and the company will replace the airbag free of charge.
In other news, Mercedes is recalling a single 2023 EQS 450+ because mounting brackets in the roof might not meet specifications and may have sharp edges. This could potentially result in damage to the side curtain airbags during deployment.
The vehicle in question is believed to be equipped with mounting brackets from an “early production phase.” Mercedes determined a potential safety risk couldn’t be ruled out, so they decided to conduct a recall. It will see the mounting brackets replaced and the vehicle’s side curtain airbags inspected for damage. If any is found, they’ll be replaced free of charge.
