• The latest GT3 RS has much more downforce than the older models it replaces.
  • A 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six with 518 hp helps the car stand out from its rivals.

The Porsche 911 GT3 RS is one of the quickest cars to ever lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife, but does it also have the goods to storm around the Top Gear test track and leave more expensive and powerful supercars in its wake?

To answer that question, Top Gear recently got its hands on the track-focused machine and handed the keys over to The Stig. Unsurprisingly, it set a very quick time, although it may not be quite as fast as some would have expected.

With a time of 1:14.8, the GT3 RS proved to be quicker than the Dodge Viper ACR and McLaren 600LT, and 1.3 seconds quicker than the 991.1-gen 911 GT3 RS. However, it couldn’t compete with the likes of the McLaren 675LT and Porsche’s own 911 GT2 RS, which have recorded times in the 1:13 range, nor the Ferrari 488 Pista with its 1:12.7 – although it must be noted that all three have a healthy power advantage over the GT3 RS. Moreover, the Porsche’s time was set while there was a light sprinkling of rain, but it doesn’t appear as though the track was wet enough to significantly impact its lap time.

Quite often, different tracks suit different cars. In the case of the Dunsfold Aerodrome, it only has a few high-speed corners where the 911 GT3 RS can put its monumental levels of downforce to good use. It also has several long stretches that benefit cars with more power than the Porsche.

That’s not to say the GT3 RS is slow in a straight line. Powered by an all-singing, all-dancing 4.0-liter naturally-aspirated flat-six, it delivers an impressive 518 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque through the rear wheels. This engine also produces one of the finest soundtracks of any modern sports car and proves that few brands do internal combustion as well as Porsche.
