When BMW and KITH team up, you know it’s going to turn heads. The collaboration between the New York-based apparel brand and BMW, helmed by founder Ronnie Fieg, has produced a one-of-a-kind M1. It’s a subtle reimagining rather than a radical overhaul, but that’s exactly what makes it stand out.
Techno Violet – A Purple Reign
Starting out as a “regular” M1, Fieg and BMW’s team decided to repaint it with a fresh coat of the German carmaker’s Techno Violet. This is the same color that premiered on the E36-generation BMW M3 many years ago, and it works beautifully on the M1. There’s just something about supercars painted in dark shades of purple, and this is one of the finest we’ve seen. Most of the M1’s exterior has then been kept standard, although a new Kith badge has been added to the rear.

Plenty of work has also been done to the interior of the first-ever BMW M car. It’s now trimmed in BMW Individual Black Merino Leather with a special Kith monogram debossing in the center of the seats, the headrests, gear shift, floor mats, and door panels. Kith logos are also featured on the door sills, and while the BMW is over 40 years old, the cabin now looks as good as new.
As for the engine, Kith didn’t mess with the M1’s heart. The original 3.5-liter M88 inline-six remains in place, delivering 277 horsepower and 243 lb-ft of torque, paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Some might have expected performance upgrades, but this car is about preservation, not improvement. It’s a nod to the past, authentic and unfiltered, just like the original.
BMW only ever built 453 examples of the M1 between 1978 and 1981. This particular M1 will be displayed at the Kith for BMW Showcase in Miami on December 6, alongside Fieg’s expansive personal collection of customized BMWs.
