• The buyer of the 8 millionth car received a check for the full price of their purchase.
  • Vehicles sold through Toyota’s program pass through a comprehensive assurance inspection.
  • Toyota used the milestone to donate $10,000 to a mental health awareness nonprofit.

Twenty-eight years ago, Toyota launched its certified used vehicle program in the US and, in that time, no less than eight million vehicles have been sold through the program. This Supersonic Red 2024 Toyota Camry is the eight millionth car.

All vehicles sold through the Toyota Certified Used Vehicles (TCUV) program must pass a 160-point quality assurance inspection to be Gold Certified. This assesses everything from the exterior and interior appearance to the engine, transmission and transaxle, braking, tire and suspension wear, and the operation of all electronic systems.

When a car passes this assessment, it receives a 12-month/12,000-mile limited comprehensive warranty, a seven-year/100,000-mile limited warranty, and an impressive seven years/100,000 miles of Roadside Assistance. At the start of this year, Toyota also introduced its Silver Certification program for select vehicles that are up to 10 years old and have between 60,000-125,000 miles under their belt.

The landmark car delivered through the TCUV program was sold by Sheehy Toyota of Laurel in Maryland. It was the lucky day for the purchaser as they didn’t just receive the keys to a shiny 2024 Camry, but Toyota also presented them with a check for the car’s total purchase price. They also wrote out a $10,000 donation to Active Minds, a nonprofit promoting mental health awareness and education for young adults. The customer has also received a one-year subscription to SiriusXM.

“It’s an honor to be part of the TCUV’s 8 millionth sale with our first-time TCUV customer, outstanding sales team, and TMNA to celebrate this historic milestone here in Laurel,” Sheehy Toyota general manager Chris Prender said. “Customers know they can trust Toyota vehicles for their high-quality, safety and durability, and our commitment to delivering reliable mobility for their purpose and lifestyle.”

While buying a certified pre-owned vehicle will generally cost more than buying an equivalent used car from a private seller, doing so gives shoppers added peace of mind that their new-to-them vehicle has been well-maintained and thoroughly inspected before trading hands. Having a warranty is also a nice bonus.
