Filling up a gas-powered car with diesel or a diesel-powered car with gas is the type of mix-up that drivers never wish to make. Unfortunately, for several customers of a Circle K gas station in Avon, Ohio, an issue at the facility meant their vehicles were filled with the wrong fuel type, all without their knowledge. The station will now need to foot the bill to repair cars that have been damaged.

The problem occurred on Sunday, January 19, at the Circle K at 36071 Chester Rd. Initially, the driver of a 2022 Jeep Wagoneer noticed an issue after filling up at the station on Sunday morning, only to find it had trouble starting on Monday morning. He was forced to have the Jeep towed to a dealership that discovered there was diesel in his gas tank and throughout the SUV’s fuel lines. The mechanic was able to fix it by flushing out the tank, lines, and replacing the spark plugs, but it cost about $1,200.

Soon after, Cleveland19 heard from the owner of a diesel-powered Ford F-350, who was also forced to send his truck in for repairs, where it was found to have unleaded gas in the tank instead of diesel.

While it’s not uncommon for motorists to pick the wrong fuel, that’s not what happened here. After reports of issues started to arise, Circle K revealed that diesel fuel had been inadvertently put into unleaded storage tanks, and gas was delivered into diesel storage tanks.

According to a Circle K spokesperson, the incorrect fuel was only dispensed on Sunday and the issue had been resolved by Monday. The company added that it will reimburse customers for any repairs they have had to make.

The full extent of the damage remains unclear, but the company has received claims from at least 14 customers so far, with the possibility of more still coming forward.

“Customers whose vehicles may have been impacted at this location may contact Circle K Customer Service toll free at 1-855-276-1947,” the spokesperson said. “We will help them through the claims process, including the necessary documentation. After reviewing and verifying the claim, we’ll reimburse customers for any repairs or associated costs related to this issue.”

While it’s a relief that Circle K is owning up to the mistake, it’s safe to say that no one who filled up there on Sunday had a great start to their week.
