• The original engine has been upgraded to produce 185 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque.
  • Most body panels are made from carbon fiber and the windows use polycarbonate.
  • A bespoke Porsche 912 build from Kamm will set back buyers at least $407,000.

In decades gone by, sports cars were nimble and lightweight and unlike most current sports cars, didn’t need to rely on insane power figures to thrill drivers. Hungarian firm Kamm is eager to recapture that lightweight essence missing from modern cars and has unveiled what could very well be the ultimate version of the often-overlooked Porsche 912.

Produced for just four short years, the 912 served as an entry-level alternative to the 911 and is often forgotten about, particularly given how many marques are now offering restomods for the 911. Kamm has been building overhauled 912s for quite some time now and has just presented its first Targa version.

Carbon Fiber Keeps Weight Incredibly Low

Dubbed the Kamm 912c Targa, the car weighs less than 1,763 lbs (800 kg) thanks to the comprehensive use of carbon fiber. In fact, all the body panels are made from carbon, and so is the rollover hoop. Kamm has also manufactured the wing mirrors, seat backs, and windows from Lexan polycarbonate.

To put that into perspective, the 912c Targa weighs about the same as a first-generation Smart ForTwo coupe (750–795 kg) and is significantly lighter than the third-generation model, which tips the scales at 1,940 lbs (880 kg). Unlike the compact city car, however, this Kamm creation is built for driving enthusiasts, combining cutting-edge materials with a retro-inspired design that’s sure to turn heads.

Kamm’s $407,000 Porsche 912c Targa Weighs Less Than A Smart Fortwo

Painted in a vibrant shade of Tangerine, the 912c Targa rides on bespoke aluminum wheels styled to look like classic steeliesThere are also aftermarket spotlights, a carbon fiber roof rack, and a bespoke surfboard that sits on the roof. It all looks very nice and the car has an appeal that not even the new-generation Porsche 911 S/T can match.

Upgraded Engine, Suspension, And Brakes

As the car is so light, Kamm hasn’t had to go overboard on the powertrain. The car’s original 1.6-liter air-cooled flat-four has seen its capacity increased to 2.0 liters and now produces 185 hp and 151 lb-ft (205 Nm) of torque. Mated to this engine is a five-speed dogleg transmission offering a choice of short, long or touring gearing, which means buyers can get a 912 suited to their driving style.

Ensuring the restomod rides like a modern car are bespoke TracTive semi-active front and rear coilovers. A set of Brembo brakes with a hydraulic handbrake complete the mechanical upgrades.

Each Kamm 912c Targa can be built to the buyer’s specification and is available with unlimited paint and interior options. Prices start at €395,000 (~$407,000) and Kamm can ship its vehicles anywhere in the world.
