• The new front fascia of the SUV closely resembles Mitsubishi’s popular pickup truck.
  • A selection of 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines could be offered for the new Pajero Sport.
  • A thoroughly updated interior should make the Pajero Sport feel much more modern.

In 2015, Mitsubishi introduced the third-generation Pajero Sport. That same year, Apple launched the iPhone 6s, and Samsung rolled out the Galaxy S6. Clearly, a lot has changed in the past decade but Mitsubishi continues to sell the third-gen Pajero Sport. Fortunately, work is underway on a successor and these new images provide us with a first taste.

Although the SUV, also branded as the Montero Sport in select markets, is not sold in the US, it remains an important model for the brand. These spy shots show it will have a similar overall shape to the outgoing model but will feature new design elements to bring it in line with the competition.

The front end is obviously influenced by the latest L200 / Triton pickup truck. There is the same large grille and similar LED daytime running lights, positioned above the main headlamps. It’s been speculated this tester may be rocking some body panels from the current Pajero Sport and that these will be ditched for the production model. Either way, there’s no doubt it’ll remain easily identifiable.

Underpinning the new Pajero Sport will be an updated version of the same ladder frame chassis as the sixth-gen L200 / Triton that’s been on sale since 2023. The pickup is offered with a 2.4-liter inline-four petrol, a 2.4-liter turbodiesel inline-four, and a 2.4-liter twin-turbo diesel inline-four, depending on the market. Power outputs vary between 148 hp and 201 hp, while six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions are offered.

In all likelihood, the Pajero Sport will borrow the Triton’s engine options, but it’s unclear if it’ll get both the petrol and diesel versions.

Several interior upgrades are also expected, although our spy photographers haven’t been able to snap any photos of the new cabin. Key updates should include a new 9-inch infotainment screen and plenty of physical buttons and switches, just like the Triton.
