• Audi has released details of the US-market 2025 A5 sedan that replaces the outgoing A4.

The A5 has replaced A4 in Audi’s compact sedan lineup midway through the 2025 model year, and that’s not the only number that’s grown. So has the one after the dollar sign. The new model starts at $48,995 including a $1,295 destination charge, which is $3,600 more than the A4 cost.

On the other hand, the new A5 is a less painful $2,400 more expensive than the 2024 A5 Sportback sedan, which the new car also replaces, and is technically closer to in concept.

Both Fives have liftback rears and sporty fastback styling whereas the A4 – which is still available on Audi’s website, starting at $45,395 – is a traditional notchback sedan. A wagon variant is offered in Europe, but not in the US.

Like the A4, the new A5 comes with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four and drives all four wheels through a dual-clutch transmission. But instead of 261 hp (265 PS) and 273 lb-ft (370 Nm) of torque, the A5 pumps out 268 hp (272 PS) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm). Despite the additional muscle, the new car is slower than the old one: the zero to 60 mph (96 km/h) time has increased from 5.2 to 5.6 seconds.

Almost 370 hp for S5

The more performance-oriented S5 swaps the four for a V6 and makes a more satisfying 362 hp (367 PS) and 406 lb-ft (550 Nm), those figures up from the old S4’s 349 hp (354 PS) and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm).

As well as growing in power, the new A5 and S5 take up more road. They’re 2.6 inches (66 mm) longer and 0.5 inch wider (13 mm) than the A4, and 2.8 inches (71 mm) of extra legroom means more space inside the cabin.

Audi has so far only revealed the $48,995 starting price and not the cost of every model in the lineup. But we know Premium, Premium Plus and Prestige trims will be available, the higher grades getting the option of Audi’s new customizable digital front DRLs and OLED taillights.

Other new techy options include a 10.9-inch front passenger display and the dynamic interaction light (IAL), an LED strip running across the dashboard that’s supposed to give the driver clues about things like door lock and turn signal status.

Audi says the full A5 and S5 lineup will be available in US dealers before the end of the second quarter. It’ll be followed in short order by the replacement for the A6, which was scheduled to get the A7 name, following the strategy adopted by Audi for the A5 in which electric cars would get even numbers and combustion cars odd ones. But due to customer confusion, that strategy has been dropped and the A6 replacement will keep the same name as the current model.
