• This 1965 Corvette Sting Ray gets a 550hp supercharged LS9 V8 engine.
  • Modern upgrades include a custom widebody kit and carbon fiber accents.
  • Inside, this restomod features a red leather cabin and a modern audio system.

There seem to be two camps in the world of restomods. Some hate them and feel nauseous whenever a classic car is modified, and then some can’t have enough of them. This particular Corvette is bound to divide opinions as it’s one of the most iconic ever; a 1965 Sting Ray.

The upgrades are fairly extensive. Like the best restomods, the modifications go far beyond a new engine. In this case, the build is based on a new tubular chassis with components from C6 and C8 Corvettes. It even features carbon ceramic brakes from a C8. There’s little left of the original Sting Ray.

Power comes from GM’s beloved LS9 6.2-liter supercharged V8. This engine famously powered the C6 Corvette ZR1, where it produced 638 hp and 604 lb-ft (819 Nm) of torque. Mecum Auctions says the supercharged V8 here is good for 550 hp, and it’s coupled to a six-speed manual transmission. Joining the V8 are stainless steel headers and custom side-exiting exhausts.

There’s no word on whether this overhauled Sting Ray has been retrofitted with some kind of modern traction control system, but if it hasn’t, a very careful right foot will be needed to safely deploy all the power. The retrofitted power steering system will also help make the car feel more modern.

Other highlights include a custom widebody kit with carbon fiber parts, a jaw-dropping cabin bathed in bright red leather across the seats, door panels, and dashboard, and a custom center console. The builder has also fitted a custom audio system, not that it needs one with that thunderous supercharged V8.
