- The system is designed to transport more than 20,000 passengers per hour across Dubai.
- Elon Musk has described the planned tunnel network as a “wormhole” through the city.
- The Boring Company has yet to confirm which Tesla models will be used in the Loop.
It’s been more than eight years since Elon Musk decided he was fed up with traffic and declared he’d start digging tunnels to revolutionize public transport across the United States. So far, The Boring Company has managed to build a ‘Loop’ in Las Vegas, carve out a few tunnels at its production facilities, and leave behind a long trail of unfulfilled promises. Now, the company is setting its sights beyond U.S. borders, announcing plans to bring its Loop system to Dubai.
Dubai might just be the ideal location for one of Musk’s underground transit projects. The city is already home to some of the world’s most ambitious construction feats, and, crucially, it has the kind of wealth that makes large-scale infrastructure projects possible. The Loop system will be developed in partnership with Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), marking The Boring Company’s first confirmed expansion outside the U.S.

Plans call for the initial Loop pilot to consist of 10.5 miles (17 km) of tunnels and 11 stations, capable of transporting over 20,000 passengers per hour. According to leader Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Loop will ultimately expand across the entire Emirate of Dubai. When fully built, the system may be able to transport over 100,000 passengers per hour.
Like the Las Vegas Loop, Dubai’s version will operate exclusively with electric vehicles shuttling passengers between stations. Though The Boring Company hasn’t specified which models will be used, it’s likely to feature the latest Tesla Model 3, Model Y, and Cybertruck. There’s also a chance that Tesla’s recently revealed Robovan could be added to the lineup, given its potential advantages in tight tunnel spaces.

Limited other details about the plan were announced, except for the fact the vehicles will be capable of speeds of up to 100 mph (160 km/h). No mention was made of whether the vehicles will be capable of fully autonomous driving or if they will have to rely on human operators as they currently do in Las Vegas.
Perhaps more critically, neither Dubai nor The Boring Company have shared how much the project will cost or when construction will begin. Given The Boring Company’s track record, those details might take a while to materialize.
While speaking via video link at the World Governments Summit in the UAE, Musk said, “Once people try it out, they’re going to say, ‘Wow, it’s really cool.’ It’s going to seem so obvious in retrospect. It’s going to be like a wormhole, from one part of the city, boom, and you’re at another part of the city, and it’s great. We look forward to this partnership.”
