• Ford expects to build between 600 and 1,400 examples of the flagship Mustang.
  • The Mustang GTD is powered by a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 delivering 815 hp.
  • The most extreme pony car to date lapped the Nurburgring in under 7 minutes.

Ford caused plenty of controversy when it banned Ford GT owners from flipping their vehicles within the first two years of ownership. While such policies aren’t unusual among high-end brands like Porsche for exclusive, limited-run models, it was a surprising move for a mainstream brand like Ford. Despite this, the policy has been reintroduced for the special Mustang GTD.

News of the policy being enforced on the Mustang GTD emerged late last week and was soon confirmed by Ford. Much like the GT, those fortunate owners of the Mustang GTD must “agree to confidential terms and conditions that include a commitment to maintain ownership for two years.”

Ford Authority notes this will prevent owners from taking delivery of their vehicles and then immediately flipping them for a profit. Interestingly, Ford hasn’t said precisely how many examples it intends to build, only previously saying it expects to sell between 300 and 700 cars in each of the GTD’s two-year production run. That means there’ll be between 600 and 1,400 units built. The higher of those two figures seems most likely.

High Demand, High Price

Last year, it was revealed that more than 7,500 people in the United States and Canada had expressed interest in the special Mustang GTD, even though it has a starting price of around $325,000. This also makes it roughly $80,000 more expensive than the current Porsche 911 GT3 RS.

So, what do shoppers get for their money? For starters, the Ford Mustang GTD features a 5.2-liter supercharged V8, delivering an impressive 815 hp and 664 lb-ft (900 Nm) of torque, making this the most powerful factory Mustang ever. It also features race-derived inboard rear suspension, advanced semi-active dampers, and a remarkable aerodynamic package that played a key role in setting a sub-7-minute lap time around the Nurburgring Nordschleife.
