- The company recently filed to trademark the ‘Mach 4’ name in the United States.
- Last year, Ford reportedly showed dealers a sketch of a possible four-door Mustang.
The idea of an extended Mustang lineup isn’t exactly a groundbreaking concept. After all, Ford already has the Mach-E, a five-door crossover that’s technically part of the Mustang family. But now, a four-door sports sedan is starting to seem like a real possibility. Ford could be gearing up to unveil a car that’s both exciting and, for some, borderline sacrilegious—a four-door Mustang, likely to be called the Mach 4.
Rumors about this new sedan have been floating around for years, gaining significant traction in 2022 when Ford released an official sketch of a four-door model based on the seventh-generation Mustang.
Fast forward to 2024, and several attendees at a Ford dealer meeting in Las Vegas reported seeing another rendering of a four-door coupe, potentially named the Mach 4. Now, it’s been revealed that Ford has filed a trademark for the name “Mach 4” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The filing was made on February 25 and was originally discovered by Ford Authority. While carmakers routinely file trademark applications for all kinds of different names, often without any intention of using them in a production model, this feels a little different. Given that Ford has already previewed both the potential model and the Mach 4 name to dealers, and has now officially trademarked it, the company could be preparing to bring the four-door Mustang to life.
There’s no doubt that the idea of a Mustang sedan will upset many purists, but such a model would arguably be less blasphemous than the all-electric Mustang Mach-E crossover launched a few years ago.
Ford’s History with the Mustang Sedan
The Blue Oval has toyed with the idea of a Mustang four-door for decades. In fact, the brand first created a four-door Mustang prototype in the 1960s. In the mid-2000s, it also reportedly created a full-scale Mustang sedan model, based around the S197 generation car. It too never saw the light of day.

The sketch released by Ford a couple of years ago showed that if a Mustang sedan is designed right, it could look pretty good. The model featured familiar front and rear fascias, but had a slightly more flowing roof finished in black, matching the lower bumpers and rocker panels.
If Ford does decide to bring this to market (and doesn’t just file the trademark and leave us hanging), it’s likely that the Mach 4 will share its engine options with the current Mustang coupe. That means we could see a potent 5.0-liter Coyote V8 and the turbocharged 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder making their way under the hood. You know, for when you need four doors and plenty of horsepower.
