• The driver of the GT-R had a radar detector, but it didn’t alert him to the officer.
  • In classic Canadian fashion, police dropped off the driver at a nearby Tim Hortons.
  • The Nissan was impounded for seven days after the driver was clocked at 93 mph.

A YouTuber in Canada has found himself without his heavily modified Nissan GT-R after police impounded the car for excessive speeding in a 90 km/h (56 mph) zone in Lantzville, British Columbia. Along with losing his Japanese supercar-slayer for a week, he’s also been handed a CA$368 (~$250) fine.

The incident took place on February 2 around 6 p.m. when an unmarked officer with the British Columbia Highway Patrol heard a loud engine roar away from a stoplight on Highway 19. Sensing that someone was having a little too much fun, the officer grabbed his laser speed reader and clocked the GT-R hitting 150 km/h (93 mph) in the 90 km/h zone.

The driver likely had no idea police were onto him as the GT-R had been equipped with a radar detector. Unbeknownst to him, “a laser reader will not be picked up by a detector until it’s too late,” according to Corporal Michael McLaughlin from the BC Highway Patrol.

It’s unclear if the GT-R in question has any significant mechanical modifications, but it has been equipped with a slew of visual updates. For example, there’s a new rally-inspired light pod on the hood, yellow LED daytime running lights, and a roof rack carrying a large cage. The Nissan also sits on a set of aftermarket wheels and has a towering rear wing.

“The Nissan GT-R driver, who identified himself as a YouTube influencer, never saw the unmarked police car, and he was surprised that his radar detector stayed silent,” added Corporal McLaughlin.

Rather than putting up a fight, the driver and his passenger cooperated with police. After the car was towed, officers even gave them a lift to a nearby Tim Hortons to wait for his mom to pick him up, because sometimes, even influencers need a ride home.
