Lancia has produced some incredible hits over the decades. One of the brand’s more memorable cars from the 1980s and 1990s was the Thema sedan, which later spawned a station wagon version designed by Pininfarina. But this particular Thema is even more noteworthy than the standard wagon.
You see, when Lancia was pondering the idea of turning the Thema into a wagon, the company reached out to both Pininfarina and Zagato, tasking them with designing their own estate version of the Thema. Zagato unveiled its creation first, at the Geneva Motor Show in 1985, before Pininfarina showcased their Thema wagon at the same year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. Lancia ultimately decided to produce the Pininfarina-designed car, and just two Zagato prototypes were built.

This particular Thema was the personal car of Italian industrialist and Fiat head honcho Gianni Agnelli, and he drove it for two years. Visually, it looks very similar to the Pininfarina car but has black D-pillars and a slightly different tailgate.
RM Sotheby’s will auction off the car on April 20 and notes that while Agnelli parted ways with it after two years, it’s always remained in Italy. It currently has 92,329 km (57,370 miles) on the clock and looks to be in excellent condition. The cabin has also been well maintained and the blue cloth seats show very few signs of wear. The auction house expects it to sell for between €80,000 (~$86,600) and €160,000 (~$173,200).

A pair of other cars previously owned by Agnelli are being sold on the same day. One is a 1986 Fiat Panda the grandson of Fiat’s founder purchased new and drove during skiing trips in St. Moritz. He kept the car until 2001 and it was recently restored to its original condition. The Panda has been driven 119,768 km (74,420 miles) and may fetch as much as €40,000 (~$43,300).
The third car being offered for sale is a 1974 Fiat 130 Familiare, which could sell for between €170,000 (~$184,000) and €300,000 (~$324,800). It’s one of just three cars built and fitted with faux wood trim on the sides and a wicker basket on the roof.
