- A Cybertruck sank in Ventura Harbor, exposing some flaws in Musk’s boat claims.
- The owner was reportedly attempting to launch a jet ski when the mishap occurred.
Remember when Elon Musk made that borderline absurd claim that the Cybertruck would be “waterproof enough to serve briefly as a boat, so it can cross rivers, lakes, and even seas that aren’t too choppy” back in 2022? Classic Elon. Well, reality has a funny way of setting expectations straight.

As it turns out, the dream of a Cybertruck that could double as a boat was, well, a bit too optimistic, and one unlucky Tesla owner found that out the hard way this week. On Monday morning, a Cybertruck was spotted at the bottom of Ventura Harbor in California—much to the dismay of its owner, who, let’s be honest, probably didn’t plan on testing the truck’s “watertight” feature quite this way.
What Happened?
According to a fire battalion chief on the scene who spoke to ABC7, the incident began when the owner apparently tried to launch a jet ski. Somehow, in what can only be described as a spectacular miscalculation, the Cybertruck ended up sliding into the water instead. By the time emergency crews arrived, the truck had fully embraced its new aquatic lifestyle being completely submerged.
The good news? No one was inside the vehicle. The driver managed to climb out before it sank, so at least there’s that sliver of optimism in an otherwise soggy situation.
A diver was dispatched to hook the truck up to a tow line. After some wrestling, the waterlogged electric vehicle was pulled back from the depths. As it resurfaced, water poured from every conceivable opening, including the driver’s window, which appears to have been left open when the driver jumped out. So much for Musk’s boat dreams.
As for the truck itself, you don’t need to be an engineer to understand that saltwater, electricity, and modern vehicles don’t exactly play well together. Safe to say, that this particular Cybertruck isn’t coming back from this one.
