• The Grand California has been upgraded for 2025, mirroring the facelifted Crafter.
  • Highlights include a new digital cockpit, a camper control panel, and more ADAS.
  • The motorhome is powered by a 2.0-liter turbodiesel, and is available with AWD.

Volkswagen has introduced a range of improvements for the Grand California, its largest motorhome, designed to make it even more appealing to camping enthusiasts. This refreshed version of the California family’s flagship model introduces upgraded screens, better connectivity, and new driver assistance features among other changes.

Originally launched in 2019, the Grand California is based on the VW Crafter LCV. For the 2025 model year, the most notable update is the new free-standing infotainment display. Available in 10.4-inch or 12.9-inch sizes, this screen comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, making it easier for users to stay connected while on the road.

As with the 2024 facelifted Crafter, the Grand California now also features a digital instrument cluster and the option for a voice assistant, which includes ChatGPT integration. Other updates include an electronic handbrake with an Auto Hold function, a redesigned gear lever, and improved switchgear. The ADAS suite has also been enhanced with Volkswagen’s Travel Assist.

Practical Comforts for Campers

Inside, the Grand California gets a new 5-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen mounted in the living area, which mirrors the one found in the smaller Multivan-based California. This “camper control panel” provides easier access to various functions, such as controlling the auxiliary heating and adjusting ambient lighting. The California app has also been upgraded, offering owners the ability to monitor water levels, battery charge, and other essential data directly from their smartphones.

Familiar Exterior & Layout

Visually, the Grand California hasn’t undergone any changes. The exterior remains mostly the same, with the exception of updated badging at the rear. The model is still offered in two configurations: the taller 600 and the longer 680. Both versions come equipped with a kitchen, a bathroom, and a sleeping area with options for either a transverse or longitudinal layout.

Amenities include a 70-liter (2.5 cubic feet) fridge/freezer, an 110-lt (3.9 cubic feet) fresh water tank, a two-burner stove, a sink, a shower, a dining area, and a double bed. Occupants also have access to a pair of folding chairs and a camping table, which are stored in the rear wing doors.

Engine & Performance Details

The VW Grand California continues to use the familiar 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder turbodiesel, which has been upgraded to meet the latest Euro VI HD emissions standards. The engine produces 161 hp (120 kW / 163 PS) and 410 Nm (302 lb-ft) of torque. Depending on the trim level, power is sent to either the front wheels or all four wheels (4Motion), with an eight-speed automatic gearbox as standard.

Pricing & Availability

The updated Grand California is already available for order. In the UK, the Grand California 600 starts at £84,046 ($108,800), while the Grand California 680 is priced from £86,800 ($112,300). Buyers also receive a five-year warranty and roadside assistance.

The Grand California is part of a broader Volkswagen camper lineup, which includes the smaller Caddy California and the California campers. Sadly, these models are not available in North America. However, there are reports that a California version of the electric ID.Buzz is in the works, although its launch has been delayed due to lower-than-expected demand for fully electric campers.
