• MQB-based cars will be getting an advanced Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving system.
  • The new system will be available in the coming years across multiple VW Group brands.
  • Hands-free driving, traffic jam assist, and parking assist will be part of the package.

Vehicles based on Volkswagen’s MQB platform are about to get a lot more capable thanks to a new partnership with Valeo and Mobileye. This paves the way for an upgraded Level 2+ semi-autonomous driving system.

Set to be launched in the “next few years,” the system promises to improve safety and comfort in high-volume vehicles. This should benefit consumers and the automaker as there will be streamlined procurement across multiple brands. This implies reduced costs and complexity, while also giving customers more advanced features.

Since the system is still a ways off, details are limited. However, the companies said we can expect hands-free driving on approved highway sections as well as traffic jam assist, parking assist, and a 360° emergency assist system. This is on top of “hazard detection” and future-ready capabilities such as support for augmented reality displays.

While that’s vague, it appears we can expect eyes-on, hands-off driving on select roads at speeds up to 81 mph (130 km/h). This should be accompanied by automatic lane changes to make long drives even more relaxing.

Enabling these features is a “360° ring” of cameras, radars, and sensors. They’ll be joined by Mobileye’s new Surround ADAS platform as well as an EyeQ 6 High processor and mapping technologies. This will mark the first time all these components have been integrated into a single system and the companies said this results in multiple ECUs being replaced by a centralized unit, which helps to improve efficiency and performance.
