• The next-gen A6 sedan shares its front-end design and cabin layout with the A6 Avant.
  • Audi nearly renamed its ICE-powered A6 to A7 before reversing the move the last minute.
  • Launch engines will include a 201hp four-cylinder and a 362hp V6 gasoline powertrain.

Audi has bigger fish to fry at the moment, having abruptly halted all vehicle shipments to the US as it scrambles to deal with the Trump administration’s 25% auto tariffs. But while that drama unfolds, the company is also teasing the next generation of its gas-powered A6 sedan, set to debut on April 15.

The teaser doesn’t give much away, but it doesn’t really need to. Thanks to the recent reveal of the A6 Avant in Europe, we already have a pretty good idea of what the sedan will look like. The wagon isn’t heading to North America, but the sedan is, at least for now, pending any last-minute tariff-induced reversals from Audi.

Visually, three-quarters of the A6 sedan will be identical to the Avant. The major differences will appear at the rear, where the sedan gets its own take on the design, including the wide LED light strip and real exhaust outlets, a welcome change after years of cosmetic fakery.

Familiar Interior, New Promises

The new A6 sedan shares its interior with the Avant pictured above.

Inside, the layout will be nearly identical across both bodystyles, with the sedan sacrificing the Avant’s larger and more practical cargo area. The cabin features a clean, tech-heavy design with a large screen in place of traditional instrument cluster and infotainment system, accompanied by a secondary screen in front of the passenger. Audi says it’s aiming to win back its reputation for class-leading interiors after criticism of declining quality—but we’ll believe it when we see it.

Here’s a footnote: Audi had originally planned to rename the gas (and, in Europe, diesel) versions of its BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class rival as the A7, in order to separate them from the new A6 E-tron electric model recently launched in the US. But at the last minute, the company reversed course and stuck with the A6 badge after all.

Engine Options

Under the hood, the new A6 sedan will carry over the same engines introduced in the Avant. That includes a 2.0-liter TFSI four-cylinder gasoline engine producing 201 horsepower (150 kW / 204 PS), as well as a 3.0-liter TFSI six-cylinder gasoline unit delivering 362 horsepower (270 kW / 367 PS). Despite sharing that six-cylinder with the S5, this model doesn’t get the S6 badge. European markets and others outside the U.S. will also receive a 2.0-liter TDI four-cylinder diesel with the same 201-hp output.

What Comes Next?

It’s still unclear whether more powerful S6 variants will join the lineup or if the high-performance RS6, rumored to be offered with either a V8 or a plug-in hybrid V6, will be limited to the Avant body style. Audi hasn’t confirmed whether the sedan will get the same treatment.

Sales of the new A6 sedan are expected to begin in Europe and other markets in the third quarter of the year, with US availability to follow sometime after that. Unless you know, tariffs.
