- Audi CEO Gernot Döllner has hinted at an upcoming Nuvolari Spyder.
- Model could be more exclusive than the coupe, which is limited to 499 units.
- Car has a plug-in hybrid powertrain producing a combined output of 987 hp.
Audi dropped a bombshell yesterday as they unveiled the brand-new Nuvolari supercar. It seemingly came out of nowhere and deliveries are scheduled to begin next year.
While the model is being billed as an R8 successor, it will be much rarer as production is limited to 499 units. However, you might want to put an asterisk next to that number as Audi CEO Gernot Döllner hinted at the possibility of a roadster.

Top Gear asked if the coupe would be followed by another 499 Nuvolari Spyders. He said no, but was then asked if that meant they’re not building a Spyder or not building 499 of them. Döllner reportedly chuckled and said “Not 499.”
This seems to imply the coupe will be followed by an even more exclusive variant that will put the wind in your hair. That’s hardly surprising, but it raises a number of questions.
Audi Concept C
One of the biggest is which type of roof the car will have. While the R8 Spyder had a soft top, the Concept C had a retractable hardtop. It wouldn’t be hard to imagine the Nuvolari going the same route as they have a similar design, but this would come with a significant weight penalty.
While only time will tell, the coupe has a minimalist carbon fiber body and a high-performance plug-in hybrid powertrain. The latter consists of a mid-mounted twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8, a 7.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and three axial flux motors.
This gives the all-wheel drive supercar a combined output of 987 hp (736 kW / 1,001 PS), which enables it to accelerate from 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) in 2.6 seconds. If drivers keep their foot on the go pedal, it will eventually hit a top speed in excess of 217 mph (350 km/h).
