• Honda’s Trail Experience app tracks and records 11 key data points.
  • The software was developed with input from over 1,500 owners.
  • Drivers can film with an iPhone and control it through the touchscreen.

Honda isn’t known for building the market’s most capable off-roaders, even with a few TrailSport-badged models in the lineup, the Passport, Pilot, and CR-V, that lean more on the look than the hardware. To give owners of these models a better understanding of their off-roading adventures, a new app called Honda Trail Experience (HTX) has just been launched.

The app is available for free through the Apple App Store and can be accessed on the vehicle’s infotainment display when Apple CarPlay is in use. It collects and logs 11 important data points directly from the vehicle, displaying up to six of them at a time.

Among the key points tracked by the app are a vehicle’s pitch, roll, wheel angle, throttle position, and brake pressure. The app, which was developed with input from more than 1,500 owners of the Passport TrailSport, also logs outside temperature, latitude, and longitude, and stores all of this data on interactive trail maps. Owners can also use the app’s video feature to film with their iPhone, capturing their off-roading adventures.

One particularly neat feature is that the video can be controlled from the infotainment screen. This means an owner can mount their iPhone on the exterior of their vehicle and then record footage from inside. A spectator within range can even use the synced iPhone to record with video, then overlay it with the important data points and trail map.

“With the launch of the Honda Trail Experience app, we’re empowering TrailSport owners to get more from every off-road journey—delivering real-time vehicle data, intuitive navigation tools, and seamless video sharing to help them drive with confidence and celebrate every adventure,” HTX project lead from Honda Development and Manufacturing of America, Omar Saleh said.

This isn’t the first time that Honda has released an app like this. Owners of the Civic Type R can download the company’s LogR app, which also logs important vehicle telemetry, as well as track data to help owners racing around circuits.
