• This Hummer sank fast after taking on more water than it could handle.
  • Fortunately, the mishap appears to have ended without any injuries.
  • The driver got out in time, just before the SUV slipped underwater.

Towing accidents happen all the time, often thanks to drivers who treat “due diligence” as a phrase for other people and skip the safety steps that keep a few thousand pounds of metal where it belongs. We don’t know exactly what went sideways here, and the people involved probably wish we knew even less. As a spectacle, though, it’s hard to look away from.

This clip, posted to the CantParkThereMate thread on Reddit, lays out in real time how quickly a boat launch turns into a recovery operation when nobody at the ramp knows what they’re doing. The video opens on a blacked-out Hummer H3 sitting half-submerged in the water, a small boat still hitched to the back of it. From there, the situation falls apart fast.

A man in a grey T-shirt can be seen perched on the boat, frantically trying to release the tow hitch. As he does this, the Hummer quickly sinks, while the driver remains inside, seemingly unable to open the door.

Within just a couple of seconds, the entire front and rear section of the H3’s cab sinks into the water before the vehicle’s nose appears to hit the bottom of the lake, preventing it from sinking any further. The guy on the boat desperately tries to open the trunk but fails, clearly fearing for the driver’s safety. Fortunately, the driver pops out from the water moments later, seemingly unharmed from their brush with death but perhaps a little out of breath.

It goes without saying that this Hummer H3’s time on the roads is over. While it was designed with some military ruggedness, it was never conceived to double as a submarine. Even if it could be salvaged and maybe rebuilt, it’s not worth enough for anyone to bother.

It’s unclear what happened immediately after the video cut off, although one of the men can be asking bystanders to call a tow truck. In hindsight, they probably should have asked for assistance a little earlier.
