• The new AMG GT Black Series will look more like a GT3 race car than a road car.
  • Recent spy shots and videos show it rocking a dramatic aero kit with a huge rear wing.
  • Mercedes-AMG is expected to fit the car with its new flat-plane crank 4.0-liter TT V8.

Only six Mercedes-AMG models have ever earned the radical Black Series treatment. The first showed up in 2006 as the SLK 55 AMG Black Series, and the most recent landed in 2021, built on the first-generation AMG GT. Now a fresh one is in the works.

Based on the second-gen AMG GT, Mercedes-AMG teased the new Black Series several months ago and has since been caught lapping Germany’s Nürburgring next to its GT3 race car sibling. A heavily camouflaged prototype of the track weapon has now surfaced on the move in Spain, and it looks even wilder out in the open.

Much like Porsche’s current 911 GT3 RS, the new AMG GT Black Series will look more like a race car than something that can actually be driven on the road. Mercedes will no doubt be eager to lay down an impressive lap time at the Nurburgring with it, although it’s unlikely to be able to dethrone the AMG One with its record-setting 6:29.09 lap. That said, it should be quicker than the previous AMG GT Black, with its 6:48.04.

Motorsport Aero

The radical aero kit immediately distinguishes the car from the regular, run-of-the-mill model. Visible at the front is an enlarged grille, a splitter, canards, and a custom hood, complete with a large air intake and dozens of small holes to aid in heat management.

For as radical as the face of the new car is, it’s along the sides and at the rear where the biggest advancements have been made. The car has fat new skirts and side-exiting tailpipes, as well as large vents directly behind the front wheels, no doubt aiding in air management.

Then there’s the rear. It rocks a swan-neck style wing every bit as radical as what’s found on the GT3 RS, but perhaps sitting even higher. A radical diffuser is also present. Lap times should be extraordinary, but even all that aero didn’t prevent this prototype from getting stuck behind a slow-moving cyclist along this twisty mountain road.

What About Power?

The changes continue under the hood. It’ll most likely use the company’s new 4.0-liter flat-plane-crank twin-turbo V8, currently making 612 hp and 850 Nm in the GT 63 Pro, or 816 hp and 1,420 Nm with the plug-in hybrid setup in the GT 63 S E Performance. Given AMG’s fixation on cutting weight, don’t expect the Black Series to go the PHEV route.
