• A 1971 Chevy Chevelle SS stolen in 1993 has finally been found.
  • Police officers discovered the muscle car during a routine stop.
  • The classic V8-powered Chevy was returned to its rightful owner.

Report a car stolen and the odds turn against you fast. Most owners spend a few months hoping, then quietly give up and write it off, but one case in California went the other way. A 1971 Chevrolet Chevelle SS that disappeared in 1993 has been recovered and handed back to the man who lost it, 33 years later, which is long enough for the original owner to have raised a family, retired, and stopped checking classified ads.

The break came out of ordinary police work. Officers from the California Highway Patrol’s Auburn division were running a routine vehicle identification number inspection on the classic Chevy when something in the numbers stopped them. CHP said the details “warranted a closer look,” and that closer look turned into a full investigation of where the car had been and how it got there.

Working in coordination with the San Mateo Police Department, investigators cross-referenced historical records and confirmed that this particular vehicle had been reported stolen in San Mateo County over three decades earlier. More importantly, authorities were able to locate the rightful owner, bringing the muscle car back to where it belongs.

A single photo shared on social media by California Highway Patrol Auburn shows the shiny Chevelle being handed over to the owner 33 years after it was taken away from him. Authorities didn’t share information on the whereabouts of the vehicle during all this time. We also don’t know who was driving it at the time of the police check and if they were aware of the vehicle’s stolen status.

For 1971, the Chevelle dropped its predecessor’s quad headlights for a single unit per side, gained a revised grille, and moved to four round taillights sunk into the rear bumper. According to Classic Cars, GM mandated lower compression across the board that year to suit regular-grade and unleaded fuel, which knocked the 402 down to 300 hp, but the 7.4-liter (454 cubic inch) LS5 V8 came out the other side rated at 365 hp gross, five more than the 360 hp it carried in 1970. Nobody believes those numbers were measured the same way twice. The Chevelle still looked like it meant it.

The recovered Chevelle SS features the Super Sport package, complete with a domed hood and white racing stripes over a black body. It appears to be in great condition for its age, although the owner will probably have some digging to do.
