One More Special BMW M2 Is Rumored Before 2029

The BMW M2 CS is a phenomenal sports car, cramming the M3 and M4 Competition’s engine into a smaller and lighter package with rear-wheel drive. However, with approximately two years left in its production cycle, BMW isn’t done with its smallest performance model just yet.

According to BimmerPost member Ynguldyn, who has a solid record for surfacing accurate information about BMW’s product plans, a new version of the M2 will be released before the existing car is retired. Details are few and far between, with the only confirmation being that a “special model” is coming, leaving us to speculate about what the company has up its sleeve.

While it’d be easy to think that BMW has pushed the M2 as far as it can, there’s definitely still room for it to be developed further. One potential direction BMW could take is to launch an all-wheel-drive version of the potent M2 CS, following in the footsteps of the xDrive versions of the M3 and M4.

What’s Next For The M2?

A couple of months ago, BMW launched an all-wheel-drive version of the regular M2, producing 473 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque, so it has the hardware to pair the all-wheel-drive system with the more powerful 523 hp and 479 lb-ft engine of the M2 CS. The presence of all-wheel drive cuts the regular car’s sprint to 100 km/h (62 mph) by 0.3 seconds, and it could make an even bigger difference on the CS.

Alternatively, BMW may look to take the M2 in a similar direction to the M3 CS, launching a version with a six-speed manual dubbed the Handschalter. Another option would be for a hardcore BMW M2 CSL to be launched, weighing less than the CS and potentially having even more power.

Whatever BMW is working on, M2 fans should be buzzing with excitement that an even more special model is on the horizon.
