We are starting to lose count of the number of VW Golf variants available on the market, but that doesn’t mean the brand’s most dynamic lineup will stop its expansion. On the contrary, for the upcoming Geneva Motor Show, VW has just announced the world premiere of the VW Golf GTD Variant.
Following the first application of the R performance badge on a Golf Variant, VW will also offer the GTD moniker on the Golf’s most practical body style. Just like the Golf GTD hatch, the Golf GTD Variant will be powered by the 2.0-liter four-cylinder TDI engine producing 184PS (181hp) and 380Nm (280lb-ft) of torque, constantly available between 1,750 rpm and 3,250 rpm.
As a result, the Golf GTD Variant sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.9 seconds, 0.4 seconds slower than the Golf GTD hatch. Combined fuel consumption is rated at just 4.4 l/100 km (53.4 mpg US), compared to 4.2 l/100 km (56 mpg US) for the hatch.
The VW Golf GTD Variant is differentiated from regular Golf Variants thanks to the GTD specific bumpers and radiator grille with honeycomb structure, smoked taillights and sill extensions. The car is also equipped with 17-inch “Curitiba” alloys, black roof rails and chrome-plated twin tailpipes. Standard equipment also includes Bi-Xenon headlights, a 15mm lowered sports suspension and progressive steering.
Inside, the Golf GTD Variant gets sports seats with “Clark” cloth upholstery, illuminated door sills, black headliner and black pillar trim. Decorative inserts and panels in “Checkered Black” are found throughout the cabin, while the multi-function leather steering wheel with aluminum trim, gear knob in the shape of a golf ball and aluminum pedals contribute to the sporty ambiance.
Orders can already be placed in Germany, with the model starting from €31,975 ($36,124).
