Stretched limousines are associated with wild partying and prom nights, among other things, but how safe are these vehicles in case of a crash?
The folks from Fifth Gear wanted to find out so they got hold of an old Lincoln stretched limo and took it to a proving ground.
There they arranged for the limo to crash head on into a solid concrete block at 50 mph (80 km/h) in what Fifth Gear calls “the world’s first stretch limousine crash test.” The Lincoln included three unfortunate dummies that weren’t secured with safety belts, as it usually happens with people riding in limousines.
It may not be a scientifically researched test, but it sure looks scary, especially the aftermath of the crash in the stretched section. It’s ironic, because unlike the driver’s area that was completely crushed, the passenger section remained structurally intact. Had the mannequins worn safety belts and been lucky enough not to be hit by a flying champagne bottle, maybe they would have “survived.”
