Renault is reportedly working on its own car to do battle with the Citroen C4 Cactus, a car which is basically a supermini, but one offering interior space from the class above and nifty crossover styling.
AutoExpress says it’s already seen a prototype of the vehicle “deep in the bowels of Renault’s innovations center near Paris,” but photos were not allowed. Renault was keen to point out that the example they saw was in no way ready for production, and that when they do make it, it will look very different but maintain some elements.
Apparently, it will be built upon a new platform that’s even cheaper than what underpins the Clio, and will feature low-powered engines and low general complexity in order to focus on offering a high-tech interior.
Weight will also be kept very low, just like in the case of the C4 Cactus, so it should also prove very efficient on the move and generally cost-effective to own and maintain.
It will be the interior that will most likely clinch it for future buyers. The dash will be fully digital and will include two seven-inch touchscreens: one will sit in the middle of the dash and harbor the infotainment system, while the second will serve as a digital gauge cluster behind the wheel.
Either Apple Car Play or Android Auto will benefit from easy integration and either system could even be offered as standard on the car in a few years’ time.
