Volvo previewed a very elegant possible production coupe with its Concept Coupe study (pictured). They didn’t say they were going to make it, but judging by the positive reception it got at the 2013 Frankfurt motor show, they surely considered it afterward.

Now, we learn it may still come, but not in the very near future as the brand is currently focusing on the XC90.

AutoExpress spoke to Volvo’s exterior design manager, Andres Gunnarson, who while confirming a production coupe project is currently on hold did admit they still “very much” want to build it.

The most logical route for the coupe to take would be to use the same Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) that is used in the XC90 and will also be used to underpin the next S90 (S80 replacement). The latter will come as both a sedan and estate, according to the source report, and a third body style doesn’t seem that far-fetched.

When asked about a possible BMW X6 rival, though, a model along the lines of the XC Coupe Concept, Gunnarson said that is “a bit far-fetched.”
