Mitsubishi is apparently going to focus all of its automotive creative energy towards the SUV and crossover sector. This, for instance, translates into them entering a partnership with Renault-Nissan, which will spawn a model with common underpinnings with the Renault Latitude (also known as Samsung SM5 in Korea; pictured).

The resulting car would be marketed in the US in two to three years’ time, though at this moment we don’t know a great deal more than this.

Automotive News does say that the firm is also interested in a compact model, to replace the Lancer. It’s at the state where officials have yet to decide whether to go with a Nissan or Renault model as the basis; they don’t even know where it will be made (or by whom?).

The information here was obtained from company CEO Osamu Masuko, who confirmed Mitsubishi’s SUV-centric future strategy. It aims to replace the ASX (know as the Outlander Sport in the US) in 2016 and the larger Pajero (and derivatives) in 2018. Both will be made available as plug-in hybrids.
