Another independent designer has taken a rendered stab at a next generation Mazda RX sports car, this time, with a mid-ship layout for its rotary engine.
Dubbed the Mazda RX-9, the 3D model comes to us courtesy of New Zealand-based industrial designer Alex Hodge, who told us the following about his new project:
“The RX9 concept is the first of Mazda’s RX-series to feature a mid-mounted engine, showing a focus on performance with help from the new 16X (renesis 2) hybrid rotary engine,” said Alex.
“The 16X claims improved fuel economy and higher torque at all engine speeds, as well as an increased displacement to 1600cc while maintaining the same outer dimensions as the previous 1300cc 13B Renesis. The 2 door, 2 seater coupés body is designed as a homage to the popular 90’s RX7, taking the same aesthetic and combining it with Mazda’s Kodo design language,” Alex concluded.
I can certainly see the potential in the design, but like Carscoops reader Tinky-Winky mentioned in a comment on the Alfa Romeo Giulia concept, I also believe that many aspiring designers are placing far too much emphasis and time on creating 3D models that usually end up looking awkward for one reason or another.
Still, I’m sure you have your own thoughts so go ahead and share them below.
