BMW plans to retire the Z4 GT3 racer at the end of 2015 and replace it with a new model based on the M6 Coupe that will compete in GT racing from 2016.
Teased in a pair of sketches, the new M6 GT3 is currently undergoing development work with road tests to begin in the first quarter of 2015. BMW will start accepting customer orders for the car over the course of 2015, with further details about the exact date and pricing to be announced at a later stage.
“For me, as BMW Motorsport Director, there are few things more exciting than the development of a completely new car like the BMW M6 GT3,” said BMW Motorsport Director Jens Marquardt.
“This car’s properties make it predestined to succeed the BMW Z4 GT3,” he added. “We also want to demonstrate the high product substance of BMW M cars in motorsport with the BMW M6 GT3. One thing is certain from the first design sketches: this car is going to have the wow factor.”
Powering the M6 GT3 will be a modified version of the standard car’s 4.4-liter turbocharged V8, while the chassis will also be optimized for the racetrack.
