Your last chance to buy a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo is fast approaching, because there won’t be one after 2015. And any future Evo is probably going to have battery power and a taller body.
Mitsubishi product head Kanenori Okamoto told Autocar at the Paris Motor Show a future Evo “will not exist as we know it,” and “replaced in spirit by an SUV with high performance.”
Okamoto said it would take technology derived from its Pikes Peak racer and the plug-in work done with models like the Outlander PHEV. But as Mitsubishi seems to be concentrating on itself as a maker of EVs and crossovers, there will no longer be an Evo that’s a boring-looking sedan with a massive wing on the back. Looks like Subaru has that niche all to itself.
It’s a possibility the future Evo-like model in Mitsu’s lineup could take the form of a high-powered version looking something like the XR-PHEV concept (pictured) from the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show. That model is supposed to inspire the next-generation Outlander Sport, according to Mitsubishi.
