Jaguar’s new XE is under the public limelight now, but behind the scenes, the automaker is completing work on the second-gen XF that we spied for the first time with a production body.
The appearance of the XE has allowed the XF to grow in size increasing room for passengers and luggage.
It’s hard to see the design details with all that camouflage on this tester, but the new XF’s silhouette looks a little more dynamic than the current car with the brand’s grille positioned lower to the ground, just like on the XE.
Codenamed Project X260 and expected to launch in late 2015, the new XF will rid itself from its Ford-era DEW98 underpinnings that go back to the S-Type and Lincoln LS, switching to the firm’s new iQ[Al] scalable aluminum architecture that’s also found under the XE.
The shared architecture means that Jaguar’s new Ingenium fuel-efficient turbocharged diesel and petrol engines will most probably power the entry-level versions of the XF with supercharged V6 and V8 units likely used on the top-end models. We could see one or more hybrid versions joining the range as well.
The prototype XF we spied was fitted with a 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine.
A nine-speed automatic transmission with start-and-stop standard across the range will deliver power to the rear or all four wheels.
