There used to be a time when the current Porsche Cayman (any version) didn’t really have any rivals and it comfortably sat at the top of the sports car pyramid.

Now, it’s still at the top of its class, according to Autocar, but at least it is finally being chased by something competent – the Jaguar F-Type Coupe.

The British publication recently put the two head to head, at the hand of Steve Sutcliffe. Driving the Jag first, Sutcliffe praises it heavily for its looks, its interior and the character of the supercharged V6 engine, which he says is far more suitable for the F-Type than the V8.

Even so, the Jag cannot match the handling poise of the lighter Cayman, in this case the top-spec GTS. It may be down on power, but it’s also a quarter of a ton lighter and therefor sharper to drive – the F-Type looks like a muscly cruiser next to it.
