The Mustang nameplate has seen many highs an lows throughout its history, and it could even have faced extinction altogether, had Ford put it into production as a fwd car (that ultimately became the Probe coupe).
Consumer Reports takes a look back at the Mustang and tries to put the new model in context.
The latest one is obviously the most advanced, finally ditching the archaic live rear axle that its predecessor still used. It made for interesting (and fun) handling, but it was not ideal in the wet, for tire wear or just general stable cornering when you didn’t want to go crazy.
CR also remembers the first ever Mustang that they tested, a six-cylinder car that reached sixty only after some sixteen seconds after setting off – nowadays, even the base model is properly quick, with over 300 hp.
