In principle, drifting doesn’t sound like the hardest thing in the world. However, when you do actually try and do it for the first time, you discover it takes quick reflexes and vigorous movements in order to get going.

Even in a fairly drift-happy car, like the BMW M235i, needs coaxing to start sliding gracefully, as Chris Harris tries to explain in this (still free) Drive video.

He goes through the basics of what needs to be done in order to achieve a successful drift, and for anybody who’s never tried it it’s a good guide. However, it doesn’t substitute going out (onto a track) and trying it out for yourself.

Besides, the technique is obviously slightly different from car to car, but you should be really happy if the car you get to practice in is a Toyota GT86, as this model of BMW is still new and very rare.

One thing, though, don’t practice it on public roads – not even if you’re a fearless Georgian with oodles of talent
