One by one, VW’s mainstream models are succumbing to the group’s MQB modular architecture, including the next generation of the Touran compact MPV that is rumored to debut either at the Paris Auto Show this October or at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.

After two successive facelifts in 2006 and 2010, the latter touted as a second generation by VW officials, the Touran gets a clean-sheet redesign that heavily borrows from the Golf 7 family.

Thanks to the MQB architecture and the use of lighter materials for the body and other areas, the new compact people carrier is expected to shed up to 100kg (220 pounds) over the current car, even though it will offer improved space due to the shorter overhangs and longer wheelbase.

The next Touran will also benefit from VW’s small-capacity, highly frugal turbocharged petrol engines and latest diesel units, while we may see a hybrid version down the line as well.
