Volvo is considering producing a high performance version of its V40 hatchback in order to compete with the upcoming Ford Focus RS and other similar hot hatches. The V40 Polestar is tipped to use Volvo’s all-new 320hp four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged engine from the next generation XC90.
In the SUV, the engine will be offered both as a standalone unit in the T6 model and as part of the Twin Engine Hybrid model, where it is combined with a 79 hp electric motor. The engine should allow the V40 Polestar to sprint from 0 to 60 mph (96 km/h) in under 6 seconds and reach a top speed of 155 mph (250 km/h).
As is the case with current S60 and V60 Polestar models, the V40 Polestar will also feature chassis upgrades for improved handling and safety. Expect adjustable Ohlins shock absorbers, stiffer springs and anti roll bars, a front strut brace and huge Brembo brakes.
It is uncertain whether the hot V40 would use all-wheel drive like the S60/V60 Polestar or stick with the front-wheel drive setup from regular V40 models. All-wheel drive is not to be ruled out though, as the platform can accommodate it – the V40 Cross Country uses a Haldex system just like the C30 Polestar Concept from 2010.
However, since Ford has proved with the FWD Focus RS that a hot hatch with more than 300 hp can be perfectly drivable, Volvo may follow its example. Especially since a front-wheel drive layout would also make the V40 Polestar lighter and cheaper, which is what the car should be like to stand a chance against premium hot hatches like the Audi S3 and BMW M135i.
